FOREWARD
This “GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING HANDBOOK ” was developed by a Technical
Working Committee from the Geotechnical Engineering Branch (CKG) , Public Works
Department (PWD) of Malaysia.
It provides basic information on geotechnical practices pertaining to method of
obtaining soil parameters, application of soil data in geotechnical engineering designs
and in testing and monitoring of geotechnical related works. It also outlines best
engineering practices in the construction of geotechnical works on site.
This handbook is intended to be a guide and reference to all PWD engineers in
delivering a sound output in terms of safe and optimum design, thus minimizing the
risk of failures and damages to protect the interest of the public and government.
However, it is not a code of practice or standard to be directly adopted without good
engineering judgment. All relevant standard code of practice and specifications related
to geotechnical works shall be complied with.
A word of thanks and appreciation is extended to Ir. Dr. Mohamad Nor bin Omar,
Director of Geotechnical Engineering Branch, PWD Malaysia for initiating this effort.
The committee believe this handbook will help enhance the competency of PWD
engineers and subsequently be beneficial to the department.
