In addition to discounts, some insurers provide extra benefits such as membership in Silver
Sneakers, which give you access to more than 12,000 gyms and health clubs nationally. One or
two companies even offer some dental or vision benefits.

Enroll in a Medicare prescription drug plan

As you know, people who get Medigap policies are required to have Part D stand-alone plans
(or another form of creditable drug coverage).

Please review the drugs, dosages, and monthly quantities that are shown in Appendix D1. As
the comments there indicate, in a couple of cases I’m not sure if the dosages/frequencies I
chose are correct. Let me know if any changes need to be made and I will re-run the results.
And if the drugs, dosages, and monthly quantities are accurate, you can call the lowest-cost
plan’s toll-free number shown below and enroll effective May 1.

According to Medicare’s Plan Finder program, the lowest-cost stand-alone plan for your drugs is
the Anthem Blue Cross MediBlue Rx Enhanced Prescription Drug Plan. In this plan your
estimated annual costs for mail-order refills is $1,787.29 – that includes premiums and co-
payments. For the last eight months of the year, the estimated costs are $1,367.93 (again,
those numbers include premiums and co-payments). CVS is a preferred pharmacy in this plan,
and so when you get your prescriptions filled at a retail pharmacy, you will likely get the lowest
prices there. To enroll in this plan, call its toll-free number (800) 261-8667.

Janet, there are a couple of things to keep in mind as you make the transition to Medicare. On
your initial visits to your doctors after May 1, show the office staff your new enrollment cards
for Medicare A&B, your Medigap policy and your Part D stand-alone plan. That will help to
avoid any billing confusion. Also, you’re entitled to a free “Welcome to Medicare” physical (see
page 11 of the evaluation), but you’ll probably have to request it.

                                                   Sincerely,

                                                   David Armes, CFP®
