This is from the Medicare web site -- it suggests that you let your old
policy and your new policy overlap by a month. I don't think you need to
do that as long as you have some proof (enrollment card) from your new
insurance company that your coverage will start on a certain date. Once
you have that, you can cancel your old policy effective that same date (it
will need to be the first day of the month, e.g., November 1).
