Dear Mr. Morgan:
Your Medicare evaluation is enclosed. As I mentioned in an earlier e-mail, you can enroll in Part
Parts A&B online at the following link: https://secure.ssa.gov/iClaim/rib. Or if you have
questions about enrolling, you can contact Social Security at (800) 772-1213.
After you enroll online (which you may have already done), you should receive your new
Medicare card within about three weeks. It should show that your Part A and Part B effective
date is 2-1-11. Because you haven’t yet started receiving Social Security benefits, you will be
billed quarterly in advance for your Part B premiums. And when you do eventually begin
receiving your benefits, your Part B premiums will be deducted from the monthly checks. In the
coming weeks when you enroll in your supplemental coverage, it will include your Part D
benefits.
The costs shown in your evaluation are estimates for the 2022 plan year, but your costs will be
somewhat less because you’ll be enrolled for only 11 months. Medicare has not yet announced
the Part B premium and deductible amounts for 2022, so the 2021 amounts are used.
Since you will not have an employer retiree plan to supplement Medicare, you have two types
of supplemental coverage to choose between – 1) a Medicare Advantage plan that includes
prescription drug benefits; 2) a Medigap policy and a Part D stand-alone plan.
In your questionnaire you indicated that you are not interested in an Advantage HMO plan, and
so your evaluation compares two Medicare Advantage PPO plans and two Medigap plans. After
you’ve reviewed the evaluation and decided on the coverage you want, you can enroll in the
following ways:
1) To enroll in one of the Advantage plans compared in your evaluation, you can call the
plan’s toll-free number (shown on pages 2-3). When you enroll in the Advantage plan, it
will include your Part D benefits.
2) If you decide to get a Medigap policy and a Part D stand-alone plan, you can first decide
which Medigap plan you want (Plan G, Plan N, etc.). Then it’s good to call at least three
insurance companies for quotes before deciding which company you will get your policy
