Page 5 - Cover Letter and Evaluation for Paul Howell
P. 5
Summary
In choosing between the Advantage plan or a Medigap policy/stand-alone drug plan, you will
almost certainly save quite a bit money in the Advantage plan if you do not go to out-of-
network providers. That’s because Tennessee’s Medigap premiums are very expensive for
people younger than 65. And as you know, in a PPO plan you can go to any doctor who accepts
Medicare, just as you can with a Medigap policy.
If you decide to enroll in the Advantage plan and for some reason do not like it, you can switch
to a different Advantage plan during Medicare’s annual open enrollment each year (October 15
through December 7), with the change going into effect on January 1. Because your Rx drug
costs are high, it’s a good idea to re-evaluate your drug coverage annually because plans often
change their formularies, premiums, and cost-sharing from year to year.
During annual open enrollment, you can contact the Tennessee State Health Insurance
Assistance Program (SHIP) at (877) 801-0044 and request an evaluation of your drug costs for
the coming year. This is a Medicare-sponsored counseling agency and there is no cost for an
evaluation. This Tennessee agency should also be able to answer any other questions you have
about your Medicare coverage.
In conclusion, Paul, there are a couple of things to keep in mind as you make the transition to
Medicare. On your initial visits to your doctors after May 1, show the office staff your new
enrollment cards. That will help to avoid any billing confusion. Also, you’re entitled to a free
“Welcome to Medicare” physical (see page 11 of the evaluation), but you’ll probably have to
request it.
Sincerely,
David Armes, CFP®
