Dear Mrs. Vander Vorste:
Your Medicare evaluation is enclosed. Please check the information on the client data sheet on
page 5 to make sure it is correct. Also, please verify that the attached list of your Rx drugs,
dosages, and monthly quantities is accurate.
If you haven’t already done so, to enroll in Part A and Part B effective July 1, you can contact
Social Security at (800) 772-1213. Social Security does not automatically enroll people in
Medicare when they turn 65 unless they have already started receiving Social Security
payments. You should receive your Medicare card within a couple of weeks after you call.
When you eventually do begin receiving your Social Security payments, the government will
deduct your Part B premiums from your monthly checks. Until then, however, you will be
mailed a quarterly invoice for your Part B premiums.
In most cases the costs shown in your evaluation are for the 2018 plan year, even though you
will be enrolled only for the last six months of this year. You indicated in your questionnaire
that you are interested in comparing both types of supplemental coverage -- Medigap policies
and Medicare Advantage plans. But there are only five Advantage plans in your zip code, as
shown on the attached list.
Two of these plans are sponsored by Kaiser Permanente, and if you enrolled in either of them
you would have to use Kaiser physicians to be covered. The remaining three plans are HMO’s,
which are not good choices for someone who plans to do a reasonable amount of traveling, as
you do. In HMO’s, you will not be covered outside the plans’ service areas unless it’s an
emergency.
That leaves Medigap policies as your best option, and your evaluation compares four Medigap
plans (Plans F, G, N, and L). Medigap policies do not have networks and are the optimal
coverage for people who travel and may occasionally want to see a doctor in another state.
Medigap policies do not include prescription drug coverage, and so people who have Medigap
policies must also enroll in a Part D stand-alone plan, discussed in the Rx drug coverage section
below.
