Dear Mr. Lingane:
Your Medicare evaluation is attached. You might begin by checking the information on the
client data sheet on page 5 to make sure it is correct. In most cases the costs shown in the
evaluation are estimates for the entire 2017 plan year, even though you will be enrolled for
only the last two months of the year.
You indicated on your questionnaire that you wish to consider both types of coverage –
Medicare Advantage plans and Medigap policies. But there are only two Advantage plans in
your zip code and neither of them appears to meet your needs. One of these plans is a Kaiser
Permanente Advantage plan, and while it is an excellent plan, if you choose it you will be
required to use Kaiser physicians and facilities for your health care.
The other Advantage plan in your zip code is the AARP MedicareComplete SecureHorizons HMO
plan, which is sponsored by UnitedHealthcare. But neither of your physicians is listed in this
plan’s provider directory, as shown in Attachment A, and as you know, in an HMO if you go an
out-of-network doctor, you will pay the full cost (emergencies are exceptions). Also, for an
HMO this plan has high monthly premiums of $107 a month, including the Rx drug premium.
Sometimes the Advantage plan directories are out ot date, and if you might be interested in this
plan if it turns out your doctors are in its network, I’ll be glad to add this plan to your
evaluation. The easiest way to verify whether your doctors are in the network is to call their
offices and ask.
Since it doesn’t appear that either of the Advantage plans matches your needs, that leaves
Medigap policies as your only good options. The evaluation compares four Medigap plans. After
you choose a plan, you can enroll by telephone. Attachment B1 includes the toll-free numbers
of the insurance companies that sell Medigap policies in San Mateo County.

The Medigap plans that are compared are Plan F, Plan G, Plan N and Plan L. As you may know,
Medigap policies can be purchased during the first six months you have Part A and Part B
without your having to answer questions about your health. After that six-month period has
