As mentioned, if you buy a Medigap policy you will also need to enroll in a Part D stand-alone
plan. In 2018 the lowest-cost stand-alone plan for the drugs that you take is the SilverScript
Choice Prescription Drug Plan. For the full year, this plan’s estimated costs for the drugs that
you take is $6,334, including premiums, deductible, and co-payments. Those costs assume you
will get monthly refills at a CVS Pharmacy. Even though you currently use mail-order refills, in
2018 you would save more than $1,000 by getting your refills at CVS. That may not be the case,
however, when you enroll in Medicare in 2021.
This year the lowest-cost stand-alone plan for mail-order refills for your drugs is the AARP
MedicareRx Walgreens Prescription Drug Plan. But as noted it would cost you roughly $1,000
more to get mail-order refills in this plan than to get monthly refills at CVS in the SilverScript
Choice plan.
The Humana Choice Regional PPO Advantage Plan would cost you $6,970 for your Rx drugs this
year if you were to get monthly refills at CVS – and an additional $1,600+ to get mail-order
refills.
Mary Beth, please let me know if you have any questions or would like additional information.
Sincerely,
David Armes, CFP®
