Dear Mrs. Rosenstein:
Your Medicare evaluation is enclosed. Please check the information on the client data sheet on
page 5 to make sure it is correct. When we spoke, you indicated that you want to consider only
Medigap policies for your supplemental coverage, and that you do not need to enroll in a Part D
stand-alone plan because you will get your prescription drug coverage through your husband’s
employment plan.
Since you want your coverage to begin February 1, 2018, you should purchase your Medigap
policy within the next week or so. That way, you will have your enrollment card by February 1.
It is possible that the insurance company will want to verify that you have Part A and Part B
before it issues you a policy (if so, it will do that with Medicare).
Medigap policy choices
All told, there are 10 Medigap plans, each with a slightly different set of benefits. These 10
plans and their benefit designs are shown on pages 6-7 of your evaluation. Also, pages 2-3 show
more detailed side-by-side comparisons of four of these plans – Plans F, G, N, and L – which the
evaluation focuses on.
After you’ve decided on the plan you want, we suggest that you call a minimum of three
insurance companies for their current quotes before deciding which company you will buy your
policy from. Generally you will want to choose the lowest-premium company, although you
may want to consider other factors such as company size, reputation, and financial strength.
Appendix A2 lists the companies that sell Medigap policies in the state of New York and their
toll-free numbers.
The four Medigap plans compared in more detail in your evaluation all provide good coverage.
Plans F, G, and N are similar, while Plan L requires more cost sharing but, unlike the other three,
has an out-of-pocket limit. These are not the only good Medigap plans, but they are all
relatively comprehensive.
Perhaps the most desirable attribute of Medigap policies is the flexibility they offer. You do not
need referrals to see specialists and will be covered when you see any provider who accepts
