If at a future point you enroll in a Part D stand-alone plan, you will likely be asked to show proof
that you have had “creditable prescription drug coverage” for the period since Medicare
became your primary coverage. It might be a good idea, then, to keep a copy of any notices you
have received from your husband’s plan about not needing to enroll in Part D (ideally, a notice
would indicate that the employer’s prescription drug plan is considered creditable coverage by
Medicare).
Your Health Savings Account
You indicated on your questionnaire that you are currently contributing to a Health Savings
Account. As you may know, you will no longer be able to contribute to this account beginning in
February.
Paulina, please let me know if you have any questions. There are a couple of things to keep in
mind as you make the transition to Medicare as your primary coverage. On your initial visits to
your doctors after February 1, show the office staff your enrollment cards for Medicare A&B
and your Medigap policy. That will help to avoid any billing confusion. Also, you’re entitled to a
free “Welcome to Medicare” physical during your first year of Medicare enrollment, but you’ll
probably have to request it.
Sincerely,
David Armes, CFP®
