Brachytherapy

The word 'brachytherapy' originates from the Greek word

'brachy' which means short distance. Brachytherapy is

defined as an interenal radiation therapy with short

distance treatment of malignant disease with radiation

emanating from small sealed (encapsulated) sources. The

sources are placed directly into the treatment volume or

near the treatment volume. The sources can be photon

sources, beta sources and neutron sources.

Brachytherapy can be classified into different types based

on the implant duration, source position, source loading

             pattern and dose rate.
