FLOATING

FOR LOVE OF A FROZEN HEART
by Carousel Sackman
I remember days like this,
And yet I don’t want to think about it, The way we used to play,
Cheeks rosy as smiles froze to our faces.
The ground is as white as it was all those years ago, Glittering crystals reflect what little light there is,
I can’t tell if the sting is from the glare or my tears, It hurts to see children play in the cold.
How can the sky be so grey?
It was so bright when we were younger,
And now I must stop my mind from wondering, As the crunch of snow follows my every step.
You wanted to learn how to draw,
To make things with your own hands,
So we could make something that would last,
As our friendship became something else in the cold.
I can’t even stare out the window anymore, Because I see the wind chimes we made together, Tiny glass snowflakes twirling around small metal pillars,
Blue like ice and grey like the winter sky.
It’s hard not to listen,
The clink and ring of glass on metal, The fading scratch of your pencil, The crinkle of frosted paper.
The warmth of your hand still rests on my shoulder, With a smile so bright it rivaled the sun,
Your eyes were so pleading I couldn’t refuse,
You wanted to teach me something for a change.
I can still hear you laughing,
Like the wind is playing with my head,
Metal and glass click together like broken ice, Why did we go skating that day?
