Shrubs
and You
By Ursula Rogers, Colorado Master Gardener
It is nally spring, or at least the calendar says so. We’d probably be better off looking at our gardens than at the calendar. Where we live and what kind of microclimate we have in any given spot will in uence when spring arrives in our corner of the world. Northside of the house or heavily shaded: you’d better be patient. Southside or east facing, wind protected: you will notice that new growth will be visible much earlier, and you could go out on a nice dry day and cut back those brown perennials or even that shrub you’ve been meaning to prune back. But remember that unless you have some experience and kept track last year of when the shrub bloomed, the only really safe time to prune back a shrub is after it blooms (unless you don’t care about owers in which case it doesn’t matter). Yes, you can cut back a late- (i.e. summer) blooming shrub in late winter, but it’s too late for that this year. So let it do its thing, and then prune if necessary.
Remember that not all shrubs need to be pruned every year. There should be a reason! Dead branches, crossing branches, branches growing towards the inside of the shrub: those are good things to prune. You will remove dead wood which can cause entry points for bacteria, crossing (and rubbing) branches will also open wounds, and branches cut out from the inside of the shrub will admit more sunlight and reduce dead branch formation on the inside.
