How Romantic is Valentine’s Day
By Ree Thompson, Castle Rock resident
February 14 will be another day for sweethearts to have weddings and give owers, candy, cards and expensive gifts in the name of St. Valentine. Did you know that this day being romantic is pure ction. It originated as a liturgical feast to celebrate the decapitation of a third century Christian martyr. Do you wonder how we ever got from beheading to betrothing? What is remembered about St. Valentine was that he loved performing Christian marriage rituals or passing notes between jailed Christian lovers. Still other stories romantically involved him with the blind girl whom he allegedly healed, as well as stories of miracles and martyrdoms. (theconversation.com/the-real-st-valentine- was-no-patron-of-love)
I don’t know how true any of the story is, but I am glad that it has been reversed to be a day to express our love for others. Our world could use a lot more love and caring of others. Wouldn’t it be even better if we could do the same thing the other 364 days of the year?
I Corinthinians 13:4-8 Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in righteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.
Really?
