Did You Know This About...
The Street Names

Douglas County Commissioner and former State Patrol O cer assigned to Castle Rock in the 1980’s
Lora’s May article introduced the settlers that became namesakes of the streets in Castle Rock. We learned about Jeremiah Gould and his partner John Craig, Philip P. Wilcox and David Gilbert. Elbert Street is named after a former territorial governor and Lewis Street is named after the Castle Rock Marshal who was killed in the line of duty on February 14, 1946.....

There are many MORE interesting historical  gures for whom strees are named...
I remember that the State Patrol once used a garage near 5th and Wilcox that belonged to the Burgess family, so let’s start with the origin of Burgess Drive, which
was
named
in 1970.
The July
20, 1961 edition of The Douglas County News reported: “Charles W. Burgess, late of Castle Rock, enjoyed his visits here prior to World War II and said that when he retired from Dorr Mining and Engineering Co., he was going to make Castle Rock his home. He loved the outdoors and traveled extensively for his company. By the irony of fate, he was one of the engineers who

designed the sewerage system of Tokyo, Japan in the early 30’s and yet it was the Japanese who imprisoned him among thousands during World War II in the Philippines, Bilibid Prison.
Upon his release from 3 years’ concentration camp imprisonment, he appeared to have recovered his health and returned to the Philippines for just a short time and then retired to Castle Rock. Unbeknownst to his family and friends he had apparently incurred a leak in a ruptured aorta, which he was aware of, but did not disclose it for fear of being concern to his relatives and friends.”
Uncle Charles, as Burgess was known, worked his way through college at
the Colorado School of Mines and went to work for the Dorr Mining
and Engineering Co. While he was
