THE NEW BISHOP II7
intervention of Divine Providence. On fourteenth,
June
three days after he had presented the facts and figures,
the worried Founder sought the prayerful assistance of
Mother Joseph, superior of a convent in Holland, asking
that good friend to have three consecutive novenas made
in honor of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and of St.
Joseph. "Recite daily," he begged rhe Sisrer, "the litanies
of Our Lady and Saint Offer two communions.
Joseph.
Organize this crusade of prayer as quickly as possible."
The community at "Het Walletje" must have been
conscripted for a similar assault on heaven.
Mr. Ryken's ordeal-by-waiting was intense bur short-
lived. Before Mother Joseph and her community had
made a good starr in their crusade of prayer, Bishop
Malou sent word to Mr. Ryken that he would visit "He1
Walletje" on June twentieth. He arrived as per promise
accompanied by his secretary. The visit was brief but
unhurried and when His Excellency said good-bye and
God bless you, Mr. Ryken could smile again.
Three days later he wrote his {riend in Holland,
Father Van Beek: "Our Nlonseigneur Nlalou visited us
on Wednesday, June 20, with his secretary. After having
visited several parts of our convent, he manifested hii
entire satisfaction. I think that the plans which our
new Bishop has for the future will be very favorable
to us.
"I go to England presently to bring a Brother to re-
place Brother Alphonse who must return here to pre-
pare to go with other Brothers to America at the be-
ginning of next year."
