the non-French over the border into Switzerland. In
two's and three's forty-four monks slipped out of the
monastery: ten priests, four choir-novices, twenty-five
lay-brothers, and five novice lay-brothers.
Let Mr. Ryken tell what happened in Switzerland:
"I went, even taking my secular'clothes, with the Broth-
ers and Father Felix to Switzerland. I remained there
quiet until Father Felix of his own accord told:me to
talk to the Abbot of Maria Stein. He had sent me to
[this Benedictine monastery] along with a few other
Brothers.
"Out of obedience I did.as I was told. This Abbot
counseled me to go to America and to become a teacher
o{ children.6 He said to me, 'Tell only the Reverend
Prior that I have told you so.'
"flaving asked this counsel at the direction of my
confessor, I had in my opinion sound reason to think
that I might follow my original inclination."
