Welcome to Idlewild:
The Black Eden of Michigan
ON DISPLAY: January - February
The community of Idlewild, Michigan, created in
1912 and once known as “Black Eden”, was one
of a few resorts where Black Americans could
vacation and purchase property. Learn about this
unique community by viewing an exhibition on
loan from the Michigan State University Museum
to SSLDL in January and February. Glimpse beyond the often told stories of Idlewild’s entertainment scene during it’s resort heyday period to learn the full story of a community that has survived the challenges of historical change. Created in collaboration with current residents and scholars of Idlewild, this exhibit consists of eleven photographic banners and a reproduction of an Idlewild history quilt by Michigan quilter Deonna Todd Green.

Broadside Press: Poetry in Michigan on Zoom
Tuesday, February 16, 7:00 - 8:00 PM
Broadside Press was founded in Detroit by poet and librarian Dudley Randall in 1965. Established to publish his own poetry, Randall was soon publishing the work of other African American writers at a time when it was difficult for black writers to be published by white publishers. The press, now merged with Lotus Press, remains active in Detroit, still publishing and focusing on fostering the work of black poets. Join us as we explore this amazing legacy of literary excellence.
