   • Youth: One Crazy Summer
by Rita Williams-Garcia.
This Newbery Honor book tells the story of an eleven year
old girl and her two younger
sisters. The three sisters are
sent from Brooklyn, New York
to Oakland California to spend
the summer of 1968 with the
mother they barely know. Their mother, a poet and printer, resents their visit and sends them to a day camp run by the Black Panthers. However, over the summer the sisters learn quite a bit about their family, their country
and themselves.
• Teen: All American Boys by Jason Reynolds. Sixteen-year-old Rashad is wrongly accused of stealing. His classmate, Quinn, is a witness to the brutal beating Rashad receives by a police officer who also happens
to be the older brother of
Quinn’s friend. Written in tandem by two award-winning authors this poignant story is told in the alternating perspectives of the two boys and ultimately reveals an unwelcome truth.
