 SUMMER READING PROGRAM
KICK OFF EVENT SATURDAY
Saturday, June 19, 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
There is clear and consistent evidence that summer and other out-of-school-time reading programs can be effective in preventing summer learning loss and improving reading achievement. The Summer Reading Program is an incentive based reading program to encourage and reward reading for pleasure and ultimately encourage a life-long love of reading. The Pontiac Public Library’s 2021 Summer Reading Program Theme is Tails & Tales. Go to http://pontiaclibrary.org to see information about the program, the kick-off celebration planned for Saturday June 19th, 12- 5pm and the Literacy Programs planned outside and virtual throughout this summer. The focus is on stories and programs featuring animals. There is even a petting zoo planned in August! Readers of all ages from toddlers to adults will be able to sign up for a profile on the Online Summer Reader program at http://pontiac.beanstack.org log their progress, leave reviews of the books they read and claim badges and prizes. There are quality prizes such as tablet computers, books, library swag, learning software and specially branded items highlighting the theme for this year. The Professional Librarians have planned a series of summer literacy programs to serve all ages. The kick-off celebration will be outside due to the pandemic and there will be sign up prizes, music and free food! Participants who finish the program will received prizes for all levels and a chance at the big prizes for their age range.
JUNETEENTH PROGRAM
Saturday, June 19
Keep your eyes open for an educational and entertaining feature during the Summer Reading Kick-Off Festival in honor of Juneteenth. Juneteenth – also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, and Emancipation Day – is a holiday celebrating the emancipation of those who had been enslaved in the United States. Each year the library invites performers, poets and educators to present a featured program to commemorate this holiday.
