The Applied Physics Major at
Kettering: Intense and Focused
Our AP curriculum is focused on four areas employers
want most: materials science, applied optics and acoustics.
We go deep, often covering industry-oriented topics that
students elsewhere don’t get into until grad school.
Our Acoustics courses will show you how to tackle sound
and vibra tion problems from theoretical, experimental
and computational viewpoints. You’ll learn how sound and
vibration affect your daily life, including how humans hear
and how structures (like guitars and baseball bats) vibrate
— and how to use that understanding to solve problems
relevant to a broad variety of industrial applications.
In our Materials Science courses, you’ll learn how to
characterize and improve advanced materials, whether it’s
nanoparticle materials, optical and electronic materials, or a
high-temperature superconductor. And you’ll be readied for
careers in fields such as nanofabrication and optoelectronics.
Motivator Our Optics courses and labs will introduce you to the exciting
world of Optics and Photonics. You will learn how light can
be put to work in such diverse applications as semiconductor
lasers, Light- Emitting Diodes (LEDs) and Liquid Crystal
Displays (LCDs).
In our Medical Physics courses, you will learn about how
optics, ultrasound, x-rays, gamma rays, radioactivity,
and magnetism are used to perform medical imaging and
treatment. You will have the opportunity to visit hospitals and
talk to clinical medical physicists at work.
