Kettering’s Physician Scribe Program –
Not your Typical College Experience
Today’s healthcare personnel are dealing with a field that
is quickly changing how medical records are documented
using Electronic Medical Records (EMR). With staff that have
varying technology skills, rising health care costs and stronger
privacy standards, different solutions are needed. Kettering
co-op students are part of the answer. Our pre-med students
are employed in the Physician Scribe program; Kettering
University has created joint ventures with Hurley Medical
Center, Michigan Health Specialists, OrthoMichigan, Capital
Urological Associates and Lansing Urgent Care.
Physician Scribes, or medical scribes, provide technical support
and training for medical professionals using the new EMR system.
Their role is to enter the details of the patient encounter into the
hospital’s records system, freeing up the physician’s time to focus on
the patient. Their work is done on portable computers. Dr. Michael D.
Roebuck, Chief Medical Information Officer at Hurley Medical Center,
said having computer-savvy young, bright students around has been
invaluable. “It’s a career exploration dream come true for a student
interested in pre-med. It’s an opportunity for students who hope to
pursue a career in medicine to get the kind of professional exposure
they need to help them decide on their likes and interests in medicine.”
Setting a new standard was exactly what Kettering’s leading
premed academics aimed at with the Physician Scribe program.
The Scribe co-op is an ideal environment for an aspiring physician
to see what it’s really like to be a doctor, day in and day out.

Your Capstone
The Capstone project relies on your complete cumulative education at the end of your academic career and depends on
your academic major. For some, your capstone consists of an undergraduate research project where you work one-on-one
with a faculty member. For others’ it consists of a capstone course with challenging projects to improve your area of study.
Examples include solving problems doctors have in surgery or designing prosthetics for patients with challenging disabilities.
