The CE Major at Kettering:
Intense and Focused
The CE program is all about embedded computers—
not the kind that sit on your desktop, but the kind that
are built into all sorts of modern products.
In the core courses, you’ll learn everything about
how computers work, from the bottom up. You’ll
take courses in electrical circuits, electronics, digital
systems, and computer architecture. You’ll gain the
knowledge to design and build your own custom
computer. At the same time, you’ll learn
how to embed computers in all kinds of systems and
program them to make the whole thing work. You’ll
write your own real-time operating system!
You can also choose electives that will teach you the
thinker. doER. robot, how computer chips are actually made on
principles behind the Internet, how to build a mobile
AchiEvER. computers, or how to program computers that control
silicon wafers, how to design networks of embedded
automated factories.
It’s a demanding program. Every single CE course has a
lab that goes with it, and you’ll spend lots of time there
learning how to really do something with what you’ve
learned in the classroom. Still, many of our students
decide to add a second major, most often in either
computer science or electrical engineering.
