Important Notes
1) The term children includes: natural children, stepchildren, legally adopted children, children placed in your home while waiting for inalization of
adoption, and children for whom you or your spouse have been awarded legal guardianship.
2) If both you and your spouse/domestic partner work for Thompson Coburn, you cannot be both a participant and a dependent under the
Thompson Coburn beneit plans. In other words, you can either both enroll in employee-only coverage OR one of you can enroll in employee +
spouse coverage. Similarly, if you have children, they can only be covered by one of you.
Healthcare Reform and Adult Children Covered by Your
HDP Under the Patient Protection and Affordable care Act
(PPACA)
Adult children up to age 26 can be covered by their parent’s HDP and
use funds from the parent’s HSA. However, if the adult child is self-
supporting or doesn’t qualify as a tax deduction, that child can’t use funds
from the parent’s HSA. Single adult children who have coverage under a
parent’s family HDP can open their own HSAs and contribute up to the
yearly family maximum—$6,750 for 2016 (spouses have to split the family
maximum contribution; adult children are not spouses, so they can each
contribute the entire family maximum to their own HSAs).
