Abstract
Comparison of air filter standards ASHRAE 52.2:2017 and ISO16890:2016 is made in this study. In the past, air filter performance standard EN779 was widely used in Europe, America until today, adopted the standard ASHRAE 52.2. In Asia, both standards are widely used. The new air filter performance standard ISO 16890, published in the year 2016 with 18 months of transition period, fully replaced EN779 in year 2018. This paper will discuss the differences between the standards ASHRAE 52.2:2017 and ISO16890:2016 and how it will impact the industry. The filter performance labeling introduced by ISO16890 refers to the particular matter (PM), PM 1, PM2.5, PM10 with the minimum requirement of particle removal efficiency more than 50% in each category. If the air filter particle removal efficiency is less than 50% in PM10, it will be labeled as ISO Coarse filter. ASHRAE 52.2 air filter efficiency labeling is based on Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) with 16 levels, MERV 1 􏰀 MERV 16. ISO16890 required removing the passive electrostatic charge in the filter while ASHRAE 52.2 is able to accept it. ISO16890 standard is leading the manufacturer towards non passive electrostatic charge air filter, which will discourage research in passive electrostatic technology in the future.
Introduction
In industry today, the two major air filter standards are ASHRAE 52.2 and ISO16890. In 1968, ASHRAE published the first air filter standard ASHRAE 52.68 which measured the arrestance and dust-spot efficiency. In 1976, ASHRAE 52.68 was updated to ASHRAE 52.76 and periodically updated until today where the latest version of ASHRAE air filter standard is ASHRAE 52.2:2017. ASHRAE 52.2 is approved by ASHRAE Society and America National Standards Institutes (ANSI). ASHRAE 52.2 is widely used in America while ISO 16890 substitutes EN779 which is used in Europe. ISO 16890:2016 is a new standard published in 2016 by International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and Comité de Européen
Normalisation (CEN). ISO16890:2016 was introducing in Nov 2016 and given an 18 months grace period to substitue EN779. Figure 1 shows the evolution of the filtration standard which involved ASHRAE, Eurovent, EN779 and ISO16890. Nowadays in Asia, ASHRAE 52.2:2017 and ISO 16890:2016 is both used in industry.
