The Recycling Concerto being played
on upcycled rubbish

All artists repeat their best bits. However, an acclaimed Recycling Concerto that’s about to have
its UK premiere isn’t about re-using musical material — it’s inspired by the environmental crisis
and is played using instruments made from old junk.
The Recycling Concerto had its premiere in February in Germany. It was created by the German
conductor Gregor A Mayrhofer, 35, and the German-Bulgarian percussionist Vivi Vassileva, 27,
who saw an opportunity to draw attention to green issues with the use of “upcycled” percussion.
Now it’s coming to the Aldeburgh Festival in Suffolk.
Mayrhofer is hopeful that the piece will inspire people to search for new solutions to an old
