Three pieces inspired by pictures at art exhibitions - by Mussorgsky, Respighi and, in the form of a first
performance, the late, great Oliver Knussen.
Mussorgsky's brilliant translation of paintings into music in Pictures at an Exhibition have inspired others to take similar
approaches. Respighi's shimmering strings and soaring flutes are a good match to Botticelli's light textures. We are
treated to the posthumous first performance (and a second performance!) of the late Oliver Knussen's piece interpreting
pictures and objects seen at the Cleveland Museum of Art, from Goya and Gaugin to a Fabergé clock.
