Danyel Smith takes a deep dive into the lives of black women in the music industry each week;
recent subjects include Jennifer Hudson, Donna Summer and Billie Holiday. Livvy Haydock
investigates sibling sexual abuse in File on 4 (Radio 4, 8pm). People Fixing the World (BBC
World Service, 3pm) looks at programmes teaching children to read in South Africa and
America.
Wednesday
Free Thinking (Radio 3, 10pm)
Celebrating tomorrow’s Bloomsday by talking to Cleo Hanaway-Oakley, whose research
contends that understanding James Joyce’s eye troubles offers a different way of reading his
book Ulysses. No-Platformed (Radio 4, 11pm) is a new sitcom set in a railway station by the
team behind The Skewer, starring Geoff McGivern, Tim Downie and Alexandra Mardell, plus
special guests.
Thursday
Deep Dive into Queer Country (BBC Sounds)
Shana Goldin-Perschbacher, looks at pioneers of queer country music, such as Patrick Haggerty
and his band Lavender Country, who produced what’s thought to be the first gay country LP
(released in 1973). Assignment (BBC World Service, 8pm) reports from Brozec, a village in
Poland that has become the unexpected hub for tons of seeds destined for Ukraine.
Friday
Dead Ringers (Radio 4, 6.30pm)
The reliably funny sketch show returns, with Jon Culshaw, Jan Ravens, Lewis McLeod, Debra
Stevenson and Duncan Wisbey. Persona — The French Deception (Wondery podcast) tells the
story of Gilbert Chikli, a fraudster who conned some of the world’s most powerful people, but
who became a Robin Hood-like hero. In Concert (Radio 3, 7.30pm) is live from Aldeburgh
Festival.
