The popular Eurovision Song Contest is an annual song-writing affair that sees
primarily European competitors battle it out to be crowned the winner, usually
with a dazzling array of eclectic and elaborate performances. This year, Ukraine
was victorious.
Due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU),
who organises the competition, have broken from tradition after ruling it would
not be safe to hold next year's contest there. Liverpool beat off competitors
including Leeds, Manchester and Birmingham to play host.
Many are already planning their celebrations, with thousands expected to
descend on the city to watch the event, and Liverpool’s own Philharmonic is to
screen the final live. On Saturday, May 13, the famed venue will utilise its
incredible sound system to showcase all the drama, glitz and glamour with
Eurovision fans.
Tickets to the Philharmonic event include a flag and two glasses of fizz, which will
be waiting at guests’ seats. Its bars will be open throughout the evening, serving
a special Ukrainian-themed Buck’s Fizz. Eurovision fancy dress costumes are
strongly encouraged, and there’ll be a prize for best dressed.
Once the contest is over, Liverpool Philharmonic’s Music Room will host an
exclusive Eurovision After Party with Liverpool DJ royalty Chris Carney. Chris, a
part of renowned DJ collective Mixnots, has played Glastonbury five years in a
row, held residencies at the biggest bars all over the city - and is a big fan of
Eurovision.
A free drink is included with every ticket to the after party. Tickets are priced
from £25 and are on sale now via Liverpool Philharmonic.
This event will complement Douze Points!: Royal Liverpool Philharmonic
Orchestra Eurovision Hits in Concert on Friday, May 12. The Orchestra,
conducted by Richard Balcombe and joined by incredible vocalists, will take a
trip around the continent, performing Eurovision favourites such as 'Waterloo',
'Boom Bang a Bang', 'Rise Like A Phoenix', 'Stefania' and many more.
The concert will be hosted by broadcaster Owain Wyn Evans. Philharmonic Hall
can be found on Hope Street, Liverpool, L1 9BP.
