Parsifal: Opera North’s orchestra excel in Wagner

In an opera so dominated by high-minded rituals and symbols, it’s dangerous when physical
details of costumes, props or lighting obtrude and jar, piercing the rarefied air. But nothing in

this staging can wipe out Farnes and the wonderful orchestra, justifiably placed centre

        stage. Touring

Zoe Drummond and Ed Lyon as Garsington’s Euridice and Orfeo
                                                      JULIAN GUIDERA

Orfeo: Garsington’s Monteverdi is a superb start to the season

Ed Lyon’s epic central performance culminates in a white-hot account of the virtuosic Possente

spirto, with echoing instrumentalists joining him on the stage. There’s much excellent singing

all round, however, particularly from Claire Lees, setting the scene as La Musica, Frazer Scott

as a gravelly Charon, and Lauren Joyanne Morris as a darkly glinting Persephone. To July 3
