The composer has introduced the work with quite an aspiration — it “seeks to address the divide

between perceptions of gender within music and between perceptions of art music”. Appreciated

without this freighted sense of mission, Across the Divide is both an affectionate, curious duet

between the soloists and a joyous celebration that feels right for Chineke! Recorded for future

Roland Wood and Zachary Altman in Don Giovanni

Thomas Allen’s staging of Don Giovanni is damnably entertaining

There’s a lot to be said for a staging that eschews any clever commentary and tells the story as
directly as possible, something Thomas Allen’s 2013 production for Scottish Opera does

admirably. Allen, of course, sang the Don many times. He knows the opera from the inside and,

by putting the singers at the front and centre of the drama, he reminds us that the opera is

principally a rattling good yarn. Touring to June 25
