In North Texas, one of the things we xas, one of the things we
DON’T have is harsh winters with
piles of snow. Yeah, we have a few
freezes, and it can get
cold. We may even have
an icemageddon or
two- where the entire
region freezes shut for
two days. However,
it is not COLD COLD
like y’all have up in the
Northern Tier. I don’t mind
the fi nger numbing-toe freezing
business that much, or the ice and
snow. What I do mind is not driving
my ‘66 Plymouth “Myrtle”! So, we
crank up the heater and GO GO GO!!
How can a hotrodder cope with locking them
away for months? I’m sure the garages are heated
and plenty of wrenches are turned, but that just
ain’t cruising. I always feel so bad seeing the posts
about putting rides away for hibernation. No
Sunday taco trips or drive in movies would make
Porkstick a sad boy!
What Texas lacks in snow, we more than make
up for with tornadoes. Last year two local events
were threatened by the twisty beasts. The Texas
Nostalgia Nationals and The Helltrain Hootenanny
were both calamities at risk of being whisked away
into the sky by swirling debris. As we say in Texas-
”Don’t like the weather? Wait fi ve minutes!”
(I’m sure they probably say that in every
state now.) The events panned out evenly
though and we all survived to tell the tale.
TNN is a very cool drag & show at Yello
Belly Drag Strip in Grand Prairie. Normally
the event is packed, but terrible weather has
driven attendance down several years in a row.
This past event brought out about 45 cars total,
with only one or two rats this year. Two dozen
made a few passes on the ⁄8-mile strip,
1
which is legendary for its dicey surface and
has claimed a few lives. For that reason
not to o many home built rats pass safety
inspection, so few are allowed to run.
