We all lost a buddy in that terrible car crash. He was
featured in RRM, and was a huge supporter of the magazine,
and of my minuscule PORK REPORT. He was a fixture on the
scene-and had been noticed by other magazines, television
shows and photographers. He was a gentle giant, a wild
cowboy and souped-up madman. So we turned it around and
tried to do something nice for his family... which THEM! was
gracious enough to allow at THE INVASION! 2015. We told his
story and tried to put a happy face on it, but we missed him.
                                                            We still miss him.
...but the show went on. The weekend seemed like one of
the hottest of the Texas summer, yet hundreds of cars and
trucks came down to the concrete jungle that is Deep Ellum.
Dozens of vendors came out to pinstripe rides and adopt out
orphaned pets. PBR and Lone Star Beer presented live music
outside for thousands of spectators to enjoy. The Chrome
Mags, Bastard City and Crash on the Barrelhead all played in
sweltering heat. Elm Street was closed off to traffic, and all
of the great bars and restaurants supported the show. Los
Straightjackets played at the after-party in TREES (where the
best air conditioning was). ... but we missed him.
One of the glorious highlights was Fritz Schenck and his
incredible "ROSWELL ROD". Fritz was inspired by ED "Big
Daddy" ROTH but forged his own way. The orange bubble
topped masterpiece is radical in every way! Literally made
of repurposed parts, spit wads and fiberglass-the car was a
dream to see in person. Retro and futuristic at the same time,
with a 327 topped by a fat Weiand 6-71. Every fella turned
into a little kid again in the presence of such beauty.... yet we
                                                            missed him.
