A striking addition to the Birmingham cityscape
Another chapter has been written in a Birmingham development’s story, as the North team undertook the handover of the Holiday Inn Express project.
Taking place on 3rd April 2017, the handover to Centre Island follows successful construction delivery, in spite of various local challenges, with the project nishing on time.
Located in the centre
of the second city, the 250-bedroom, 17-storey hotel includes a restaurant, reception and meeting room facilities with three lifts, CCTV and PA to all areas.
Construction of the building consists of a steel frame to the rst and second levels, which then acts as a transfer deck for the remaining oors, built in a precast crosswall construction. The black and white façade to the guest bedroom oors
is further enhanced by the contrasting L-shaped glazing panels, both of which are inset within the precast at varying orientations, resulting in a striking nish that can be seen from near and far.
Situated in an architecturally congested area of Birmingham and in close proximity to the main railway lines feeding
the Birmingham New
Street Station, the team pro-actively engaged
with Network Rail during construction to employ innovative methods that ensured activities did not compromise the safety
or service of the line. Monitoring stations were installed along 45 metres of the railway tunnel section that runs parallel to the site, with readings analysed on a weekly basis to highlight any potential issues to
the site team. In total,
39 piles and a 20-metre retaining wall structure were constructed adjacent to the underground tunnel successfully, without any issues or impact to the operation of the track.
Other successes during the project included a high standard of health and safety, working in excess of 600 days on-site without a reportable incident and maintaining an accident frequency rate of zero.
