Off went the little boy and his wife could hear a great deal of noise as the chair dragged across the floor. Then she could hear more noises and dragging as the little boy struggled with the chair. Eventually he came back and said, “I can’t do it! It’s stuck.”
Not wanting him to give up, she asked, “What’s it stuck on?”
The little boy replied, “The door.”
Okay, she knew an 18-inch wide chair could easily make it through a 30-inch wide doorway! So she said, “It’s really important. Please try and have another go.”
So off he went for another try. There was more noise, and then it went quiet. She waited for a minute or two then started to panic a little bit. She shouted through the letter box for an update. None came.
After a few more minutes she ran around to the kitchen window and peered in. She could see him, and thankfully he was okay. He was sitting on the floor in the middle of the kitchen. As she looked she could see that he was eating. Then she saw the back of the chair. It was next to the cabinet in the kitchen.
Apparently, he had given up on his assignment and instead, dragged the chair back into the kitchen. He had put it up against the sideboard, climbed up onto it and stood on his tiptoes to unhook his sister’s Advent calendar off the wall. There he was, sitting on the floor eating all the chocolates out of it!
I love this story he shared with me because it highlights a really important aspect of human nature. When it comes to someone 24
