We are all in it together...and we are all connected.
There is a story about the word Ubuntu, which, to a certain African tribe means, “I am what I am because of who we all are.”
It is said that an anthropologist who was studying the customs and lifestyle of this tribe spent a lot of time with the children. One particular day he decided to play a game with them. He knew they loved candy, so he made a trip to a neighboring town to buy some. He arranged quite a few pieces in a decorative basket and placed the prize at the base of a tree.
Excitedly, he called all the children together explaining that they were going to play a game and the winner would receive the prize, “When I shout ‘now’, everyone will run as fast as you can to the tree! The first one there wins the entire basket of candy.”
Eager to participate, the children lined up and waited for the shout. As soon as the anthropologist yelled, “Now!” all the children grabbed each other by the hand and began running as fast as they could toward the tree. Arriving at exactly the same time, they divided the candy and began to enjoy their prize.
Slightly stunned, the anthropologist asked why they chose to all run together when the winner would have had all the candy to themselves.
“Ubuntu. How could one of us be happy when the others are sad?”
This philosophy and way of life speaks about our
interconnectedness. You can’t exist as a human all by yourself.
