20 SELF IMAGE MASTERY ACTION GUIDE
Many, many years before Maxwell Maltz was born, Socrates said, KNOW THYSELF .. both your strengths and your weaknesses.
If you have a distorted view of yourself and your Self Image is one that you are ashamed of, you will tend to shrink away from the world and hide. Your creative expression is then significantly diminished, and you may tend to be angry, resentful and bitter. The more anxiety or fear you feel, the more guilt and shame you may feel, and the more your talents and abilities are extinguished.
But if you are proud of your Self Image, you will feel confident and step forward into growth, enjoy more happiness and operate far more creatively, freely expressing yourself with confidence and abundance.
In talking about our God given talents and abilities, John Maxwell said,
To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice that gift.
If your Self Image is stopping you from operating at your best, you are sacrificing your gifts.
The ideas that we hold about our self and our potential, even though they are not accurate, still limit what we can accomplish because they limit what we will try and so they re-define our potential to a massively diminished level. No matter what we are able to do, if we don’t do it, we might as well not be able to do it.
THE CREATIVE MECHANISM
Maxwell Maltz identified the way that the Self Image controls our experience is through the Creative Mechanism. He said that there is within each of us a life force or a life instinct.
Two key elements about the Creative Mechanism that Maltz identified are that it is impersonal and automatic.
