 If you are like most people, even with some of the better-known activities like digesting a meal, you are probably clueless as to how it actually works, and you certainly have no conscious role in it, even if you do understand the ins and outs of digestion.
Your body is marvelous indeed.
When it comes to the experience of stress and particularly your body’s response to stress, there is also a lot going on that you probably don’t understand and probably don’t have any conscious involvement in.
The same is almost certainly true of your body’s process of relaxation.
Understanding what happens in that marvelous body of yours when you are faced with stressful situations can help you get better at dealing with stress, and it can also help you learn how to relax.
Learning how your body relaxes can help you get better at relaxing and help you relax much more deeply, much more quickly. And a combination of understanding the physiology of stress and the physiology of relaxation, coupled with the regular practice of relaxation techniques and exercises can really equip you to deal with the constant challenges of 21st century life.
THE AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM
The part of your nervous system that you are unable to control with your will power is called the autonomous nervous system. There are two key parts or pathways to the autonomous nervous system:
1. TheSympatheticPathway
2. The Parasympathetic Pathway
Both these parts of the nervous system are continually working and work antagonistically with one another. It may be helpful to think of the
