The structure of these beliefs in both cases is the same, but the impact on our lives is very, very different.
The rigid hold that our beliefs have over us and our life experience is largely because we assume that they are a reflection of reality. Very often we just experience the effect of this, even if we don’t realize that they are there at all.
It is worth mentioning that, even if we do realize we hold certain beliefs, we can still find it difficult to act in defiance of what we believe, and this holds true even if we know they are untrue!
For example, someone who struggles with a phobia of flying can read all the statistics in the world about flying being statistically the safest way to travel, but that doesn’t stop the images they have in their mind when they think about flying. To them, the feelings are happening; they are very real indeed!
Generally though, we don’t realize that we believe certain things and these beliefs unconsciously control our perceptions of the world around us. We think we are looking at things the way they are, rather than looking at them just the way we see them.
And the way we see them is through the filter of our beliefs. Our beliefs shape our perceptions, expectations, positions and opinions.
The more we think about this, and reflect upon the power of our beliefs, the more we realize that there is a lot of truth in the statement:
We don’t see the world the way it is, we see the world the way we are.
The first time you hear this, it sounds like nonsense. But after thinking about it and reflecting and experiencing the world for some time, the more sense it seems to make.
