THE AUTOMATIC FAILURE MECHANISM 75
Where is the evidence that you always make a fool of yourself? Does anyone else even care at all, let alone as much as you do. They are too busy worrying about themselves.
Where is the evidence that this makes you an idiot in all areas of you just because you didn’t do as well as you would have liked, one time, in this particular area?
If you get scientific about the facts that your belief is using against you, you may see that it has frightened you into avoidance and inaction with the sort of scaremongery that a child could see through, if it just took the time to look!
INFERIORITY AND SUPERIORITY ARE TWO SIDES OF THE SAME COIN
Maxwell Maltz talks a lot about feelings of inferiority in chapter 4– Dehypnotize Yourself from False Beliefs.
These beliefs of inferiority don’t come directly from our experiences but from our perceptions of our experiences.
For example, let’s say that you are an average runner and Julia is a very fast runner, you may conclude that Julia is a superior runner than you.
Does that mean Julia is superior to you? Is Julia better than you?
Just because Julia is better than you in one area, does that mean she is better than you in every area?
If you competed in a race with Julia and she beat you by a huge margin, you might conclude that she was the winner and you were a loser.
Does that mean you are a loser in all areas of life?
Because Julia is a faster runner than you, does that mean that you don’t measure up, and therefore you are a failure?
