road rises to the stunningly situated Cape Shirley from where you can get a magni cent view over the south coast, Mamora Bay, and, on a clear day, Guadeloupe. The right-hand branch of the road climbs up the hill overlooking English Harbour, ending in the forti ed complex of Fort Shirley built by Thomas Shirley, former governor of the Leeward Islands and Nelson’s great rival. Parts of the complex are still standing, including the quarters of the Royal Artillery which now contains a museum, and, higher up, the old guard house which is now a restaurant with excellent views over the yacht- lled English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour. After a stop for lunch at Shirley Heights take the road back to Liberta and head for the village of All Saints. At the traf c lights in All Saints turn left for the road back to St. John’s.
TOUR B: THE NORTH EAST
One of the most popular excursions leads from St. John’s along Factory Road to Betty’s Hope, Antigua’s rst sugar cane plantation, founded in 1674 by Christopher Codrington and dedicated to his daughter Betty. The mill has been restored and tted out as a small museum dedicated to sugar production in the 18th and 19th centuries. Leaving Betty’s Hope continue towards Long Bay and Devil’s Bridge, a natural rock arch produced by the erosion of the sea.

Another route worth taking is the one towards the enormous Willoughby Bay, protected by coral reefs. The road winds sharply but opens out onto spectacular views over the bay. The route then splits into two, one of which descends to Half Moon Bay, a crescent-shaped bay of white sand considered to be Antigua’s most beautiful beach. (The other passes through the village of Freetown and leads to Harmony Hall). On your way back from Half Moon bay before Frankie’s Gas Station at Lavingstons turn right and then right again on the next T junction towards the village of Willikies which still maintains all its Caribbean avour and drive through it. At the end of the road a left turn leads to Long Bay, a lovely white sandy beach sheltered by coral reefs. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit Devil’s Bridge, a natural rock arch created by the erosion of the crashing Atlantic waves. From the nearby Indian Town Point, the view of Nonsuch Bay is spectacular.
TOUR D: BEACH TOUR
This half-day trip leads from St. John’s to the coral sands of Runaway Bay. After a swim in the unpolluted turquoise ocean, have lunch at one of the many restaurants in nearby Dickenson Bay.
