Another inscription, incised on a marble plate, speaks of beneficiarii – soldiers
whom the governor had appointed to serve in administrative capacities – who
erected a statue in honor of Emperor Hadrian in the time of the governor Tineius
Rufus, the governor of Judaea at the time of the Bar Kochba revolt. (It was before
him that Rabbi Aqiba was brought for judgment). The statue was apparently placed
over the southern entrance gate to the hippo-stadium. A fourth inscription, carved
on a cylindrical base of marble, identifies the room it was found in as a club for
centurions (Fig. 85).
