The sixth month of March
I WAS at a show the other night, as in out at a venue watching people perform. Remember when that wasn’t unusual? One of the singers marvelled that it was already September or as she’d been told, the sixth month of March. Never a truer word has been spoken.
Melbourne is just coming out of Lockdown 2.0 and there is a lot of talk and reports on COVID-19 recovery. I am not going to jinx anyone by getting on board that wagon just yet, but the wheels
are still turning and the food & beverage sector still performing. This issue packs a punch with five special features, starting with Ingredients. The CEO of Mars Food Australia Bill Heague
took the helm in November last year and it has been quite a ride as he marks one year in the role. His thoughts on the pandemic and working for a global family business are insightful, read from page 16.
We talk a lot about snack trends and this issue’s Snacks & Confectionery feature looks at the growing popularity of
organic offerings. There’s a lot of options coming from Australian producers, take a look on page 24.
I always enjoy our Plant Design & Fitout feature because it showcases ingenuity, ambition and growth. This issue is no different, starting on page 28 with Frosty Boy Australia using automation and flexibility to diversify into the wellbeing market.
Our dairy feature looks at dairy producers and their responses to the pandemic (page 34) and market forecasts (page 35).
In processing tech, Microbiologist Dr Philip Bottom looks at how many new and emerging technologies have been around for a long time but are only now gaining ground when it comes to keeping food safe and fresh. From page 38.
The end of the year is approaching – be safe, be kind and take care. Onward.
