Full-Time STudieS Guide 2020
Emily Ryan
is a showgirl/dancer with Royal Caribbean Cruises.
Where are you from?
I am originally from Melbourne but am currently living and
working in Asia aboard one of Royal’s largest ships, ‘Quantum of the Seas’.
Tell us a little about your present job?
As a dancer on ‘Quantum’, I get the privilege of performing in front of thousands of international guests every night in two original production shows. Working on
a cruise ship has been such an incredibly rewarding experience, I couldn’t ask for a better job!
Where did you undertake full time training?
Spectrum Dance Studios in Melbourne. During my three years of training I completed both my Certificate IV in Dance and my Diploma of Musical Theatre.
What level of education had you attained before beginning your full-time training? Like most young dancers, I had just graduated from high school when I began my full-time course. Prior to my audition I was incredibly nervous and worried but as soon as my audition began, I knew immediately that it was the right place for me.
What were the most important benefits of your studies?
My time at Spectrum Dance Studios prepared me for any job. Being able to train in various different styles while still focussing on my personal goals opened up more opportunities for me in the industry and enabled me to be
a well-rounded performer. Versatility is very important as a performer. I also found that
I had an amazing support network of teachers and mentors that has extended past my full-time experience. I know that if I ever need advice or guidance, I can always find
it in the faculty at Spectrum.
How did you find the transition from full-time into your profession?
For me, the transition into my profession occurred throughout the course of my training. I was given the opportunity to work professionally and build up my resume through industry-based learning and guidance. This allowed me to finish my training and confidently step into a career of my choice.
What do you know now that you wish you knew as a student?
My best advice is to choose a full-time school that is right for you! Also, don’t compare your growth and success to that of others. No career is exactly the same, and because of this, never take rejection personally. As a student I really struggled to focus on my own growth and was overcome by my own insecurities. Spectrum really guided me through this. Just remind yourself: if you keep working hard and focus on what you want to achieve, the right job will come along!
Emily: ‘My training enabled me to be an all-round performer.’
