Ungergraduate Courses: Bachelor of Dance Studies (3 years): An innovative, research-led dance studies degree.
A balance of practice and theory drives teaching and learning and prepares students for diverse dance careers such as researchers, teachers, community artists, choreographers, administrators and performers.
Postgraduate Courses: Bachelor of Dance Studies (Honours) (1 year), Postgraduate Diploma in Dance Studies (1 year), Masters in Dance Studies (1 year), Masters in Community Dance (1 year), PhD (Dance Studies) (3-4 years), Masters in Dance Movement Therapy (2 years)

Melbourne is the home of dance and music theatre in Australia, and the VCA offers students a strong connection to the city’s thriving professional scene through studio-based training with expert teaching staff, who are some of Australia’s leading dance and musical theatre practitioners, and through collaboration with internationally renowned guest directors, choreographers, teachers and artists in masterclasses and public performances.
COURSES
Bachelor of Fine Arts (Dance): 3 years full time. The Bachelor of Fine Arts (Dance) program builds on VCA’s outstanding reputation for performance-focused dance training that attracts highly motivated dancers who are willing to meet the program’s technical demands and creative challenges. The integrated dance curriculum develops technically strong, kinaesthetically aware dance artists and provides the foundation for an autonomous and sustainable career in dance. It is designed to develop and challenge your technical, creative and analytic abilities through specialist training in contemporary dance, ballet, dance science, somatic practices, choreography and performance. New works by professional Australian and international choreographers provide invaluable performance experience and interaction with the dance profession.
Bachelor of Fine Arts (Music Theatre):
3 years full time. The Bachelor of Fine Arts (Music Theatre) is an intensive skills-
building program that produces industry- ready, professional performers with a strong sense of individual expression. The program offers extensive practical training in music theatre’s three principal disciplines – singing, acting and dancing
– both as individual crafts and in combination. Public performance is an integral part of the program beginning in second year, with fully staged performances in third year and culminating in an industry showcase for agents, directors and producers. The Music Theatre program is also dedicated to developing new music theatre works through annual creative development projects of professional works, and by equipping students with skills to initiate, develop and perform original work.
POSTGRADUATE COURSES:
Master of Fine Arts (Dance), PhD (Dance). Main subjects: Bachelor of Fine Arts (Dance): Dance Technique, Choreographic Process into Performance, Performance Projects and Dance Lineages. Bachelor of Fine Arts (Music Theatre): Dance Skills, Acting Skills, Voice Skills, Music Theatre Combination Class, New Work, Performance Projects.
Practical dance classes per week: 35-40 hours a week.
Contact hours per day: 8 hours. Pre-requisites/entry requirements: Selection is by audition. Admission to the Bachelor of Fine Arts also requires the successful completion of the VCE (or an equivalent qualification) with a study score of at least 25 in Units 3 and 4 English/ English Language/Literature, or a study score of at least 30 in Units 3 and 4 ESL. Minimum ATAR is not applicable. International students who wish to
apply for an undergraduate place at
the University of Melbourne must have successfully completed a qualifying exam equivalent to Australian Year 12/VCE, for example A Levels or the International Baccalaureate.

Audition date: Dance auditions are held in September and October in Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney. Music Theatre auditions are held in October and November in Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Sydney. Audition requirements: Bachelor of Fine Arts (Dance): Applicants auditioning in person are taken through a ballet class and a contemporary dance class, including improvisation. Prior training in contemporary dance/ballet is highly recommended. Bachelor of Fine Arts (Music Theatre): Applicants are required to prepare two contrasting musical theatre
