THE INTERNATIONAL DAY for the Preservation of the Ozone Lay- er takes place on 16 September.
This important day was desig- nated by the United Nations Gen- eral Assembly on 19 December,1987.
It commemorates an important time in history when world govern- ments adopted the Vienna Con- vention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer in 1985.
Under the Montreal Protocol, governments, scientists and indus-
try have been working together to cut out 99 per cent of all ozone-de- pleting substances.
Thanks to the Montreal Proto- col, the ozone layer is healing and expected to return to pre-1980 val- ues by mid-century.
In support of the Protocol, the Ki- gali Amendment, which came into force in 2019, will work towards re- ducing hydrofluorocarbon (HFCs), greenhouse gases with powerful climate warming potential and damaging to the environment.
It was back in the late 1970s when scientists first discovered that humanity was creating a hole in the ozone layer through the use of ozone-depleting gases.
World Ozone Day is a reminder that collective action, guided by science, is the only way to solve this global crisis.
CLIMATE CHANGE IS wide- spread, rapid, and intensifying, and some trends are now irrevers- ible, at least during the present time frame, according to the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Cli- mate Change (IPCC) report, re- leased last month.
Human-induced climate change is already affecting many weather and climate extremes in every re- gion across the globe.
Many of these changes are un- precedented, and some of the shifts are in motion now, while some - such
as continued sea level rise – are al- ready ‘irreversible’ for centuries to millennia ahead the report warns.
The UN Secretary-General António Guterres said the Working Group's report was nothing less than "a code red for humanity. The alarm bells are deafening, and the evidence is irrefutable.”
He noted that the internationally- agreed threshold of 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels of global heating was perilously close. “We are at imminent risk of hitting 1.5 degrees in the near term,” he said. ✺
