   DEFENCE IN THE ACT
As the nation’s capital, Canberra hosts Australia's defence and national security agencies, as well as diplomatic missions and renowned universities. The city is famously home to the Royal Military College at Duntroon, the Australian Defence Force Academy, the Australian Command and Staff College, and Head- quarters Joint Operations Command.
ACT government figures (citing
KPMG) estimate the total economic contribution of the defence industry to the ACT economy and surrounding re- gion is $4.3 billion in GSP (gross state product) and contributes to 25,300 jobs in defence and other sectors.
The most recent figures available (from 2017) also indicate that the De- partment of Defence directly contrib- uted approximately $3.5 billion a year to the Canberra region, which in that
year accounted for 11 per cent of total Defence spending within Australia.
In addition, a significant percentage of Australia’s top 40 defence contractors are headquartered in Canberra and others have a strategic presence in the city.
Adjacent government organisations based in Canberra include the CSIRO and Geosciences Australia.
