As ADM closed for press, the most re- cent formal announcement occurred on 5 August, with news that Lockheed Martin Australia and Northrop Grumman Austra- lia have been selected to continue to the final stage of the competitive evaluation process for the $2.7 billion Air 6500 (Joint Air Battle Management System) program. “Defence found the down-selected compa- nies demonstrated the best understanding of its capability requirements, as well as a strong commitment to developing Aus- tralian industry capability,” Minister for Defence Industry Melissa Price said. “I look forward to seeing the advanced tech- nical solutions and prototypes that will be developed as these companies refine their final offering for the Joint Air Battle Man- agement System.”
Minister Price added the process will select an Australian company to lead the delivery and provide the core architec- ture of Defence’s future Integrated Air and Missile Defence capability and Boe- ing Defence Australia and Raytheon Aus- tralia (who both participated in the first stage of the CEP process) will continue to be involved in development. The success- ful strategic partner is expected to be an- nounced in late 2023.
During the AUKUS announcement in September, Prime Minister Scott Mor- rison also revealed Australia will acquire the Lockheed Martin AGM-158B Joint Air to Surface Strike Missile – Extended Range (JASSM-ER) air-launched strike weapon, which has a range of up to 900 km. However, the PM did not provide further details and there has been no no- tification of a potential sale from the US Government to date.
One sale which seems certain to pro- ceed however is Australia’s acquisi- tion of a single Boeing EA-18G airborne electronic attack aircraft as an attri- tion replacement for an aircraft lost in
