an accident on exercise in the US in 2018. The US State Department approved the sale of a former US Navy EA-18G in September in a proposed US$125 million deal, which will be modified to RAAF specifications to enable common- ality with the remainder of the fleet.
“The proposed sale will allow Australia to effectively maintain its current force projection capability that en- hances interoperability with US forces well into the future and maintain their original primary level of aircraft autho- rised,” the Defense Security Co-operation Agency (DSCA) statement reads.
Australia purchased twelve new-build Growlers under Project Air 5349 Phase 3 and, while Defence is yet to an- nounce or confirm the proposed sale, it has been consider- ing options for the restoration of the fleet to its original size since 2018.
JOINT AND SPACE PROJECTS
At the Land Forces exhibition held in Brisbane in Octo- ber, Boeing Defence Australia revealed it is in final stages of developing the third and final iteration of its Integrated Battlefield Telecommunications Network under Project Currawong (JP2072/2B).
Release 3 will add ‘red’ (Protected, Secret and Coalition Secret) networking to the ‘black’ (unclassified) capability
now in service and deliver a Headquarters on the Move capability, fitted into Army’s G-Wagon, Hawkei and Bush- master fleets. Release 3 is now in the Test Readiness Re- view (TRR) phase and System Material Release (SMR) is expected to occur in 2022.
The increasing importance of a sovereign space capabil- ity has been the catalyst for several initiatives gaining trac- tion throughout 2021, not least of which was the announce- ment in May of a Space Division within the RAAF, which will stand up in early 2022 under the command of Air-Vice Marshal Cath Roberts.
In term of projects, Defence Minister Peter Dutton an- nounced in July the establishment of Defence Project 9358 to explore options for acquisition of a ground-based Space Electronic Warfare capability. “Defence will explore options for a Space EW capability and provide recommendations for a decision by the Government,” he said. “This capability would help assure Australia’s continued access to space-based com- munications, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.”
In an industry briefing on 3 September, Director General Air Defence and Space Air Commodore Philip Gordon re- vealed Defence’s Space Domain Awareness (SDA) roadmap, under JP9360, has evolved since a Request for Proposals (RFP) was issued to industry mid-2020 will now seek de- liver capability in a number of tranches.
