When a manufacturer approached Allied Finishes to upgrade part of its facility to food grade, the flooring specialist stepped up.
IN November 2022, a large commercial cereal manufacturer approached Allied Finishes in view of upgrading their facility from a warehouse to a food grade production facility.
As set out in the Food Safety Standards 3.2.2, flooring in food manufacturing facilities must be sealed, to prevent bacteria harbourage and growth.
This facility had unsealed concrete, which did not comply with the standards, so an upgrade was necessary.
From the initial site visit, Allied Finishes established the need for falls to drains, to prevent water pooling in main production areas. The client was concerned about the need for a high slip resistant finish, so various options to cater for their needs was provided.
Multiple areas were involved, from the production areas to filling rooms and storage areas, totalling over 540 square metres. The project involved falls to drains, coving, joints, and polyurethane cement flooring.
Allied Finishes recommended its SteriFloor Stärke system to be installed, which is a highly engineered cementitious system that has excellent impact, chemical and wear resistance.
In addition, it has active antimicrobial properties that not only prevents bacteria from growing on the floor but also attacks any bacteria that it encounters. This antimicrobial agent is active throughout the whole flooring system, so it remains active even as the floor wears down over time.
As a new food manufacturing facility, the Allied team was working on a timeline for the start of production.
The company relied on Allied Finishes’ knowledge and expertise in the food manufacturing space to meet its specific requirements for food

safety and worker health and safety. The client was impressed
with the project and said the Allied Finishes team went “above and beyond” to meet the brief, including working on additional doorways and hobs to ensure production began when planned. ✷
